What’s the experience like?

Someone hands me a headset before I even realize we’re about to start. It’s warm in the Art Deco Centre, that kind of old-building warmth, and our guide (I think her name was Janine?) gives us this grin like she’s about to let us in on a secret. There’s a short film first—20 minutes or so—and I’m not usually a movie person when I travel, but honestly, it helped. Suddenly all the zigzag patterns outside made sense.

We step out into Napier’s streets and the sunlight bounces off those pastel facades. The guide points out little things I’d never notice alone—a carved sunburst above a bakery, someone’s initials hidden in a corner brick. She tells us about the earthquake, how the whole city just started over in the 1930s. You can almost feel it under your shoes, that stubborn optimism. At one point she stops mid-sentence because a local walks past with an armful of bread and shouts something in Māori—she laughs and tries to translate but gives up halfway through. That moment stuck with me more than any fact.

I kept fiddling with my earpiece (they give you one so you can actually hear), and at some point I realized I’d stopped thinking about what time it was or how far we’d walked. The group spread out along the street, everyone craning their necks at some new angle of glass or tile. It didn’t matter if you knew anything about architecture—I sure didn’t—you just sort of got swept up in the details and stories. Oh, bring layers; Hawke’s Bay weather is moody.
