Summary

Wai-O-Tapu colors, forest hot tubs and Rotorua’s quirky towns

You’ll leave Auckland early and watch city fade to rolling farmland before reaching Rotorua’s wild geothermal parks. Expect steamy walks at Wai-O-Tapu, laughs in Tirau’s quirky streets, then deep relaxation in your own forest hot tub at Secret Spot — all with snacks, local stories, and a small group vibe that makes everything feel more personal.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the drive out of Auckland to feel so… familiar? Maybe it was our guide, Mark, who kept pointing out sheep and telling stories about Waikato farms like he’d grown up on every one. The windows fogged a little from our coffee stop (flat white for me, not as sweet as I thought) and I remember the smell of wet grass when we stepped outside — that kind of green you only get after rain. Someone behind me made a joke about counting cows but honestly, I lost track after the first hundred.

Tirau was a surprise. You hear “Corrugated Iron Capital” and think it’s just a nickname but no — there are giant iron dogs and sheep everywhere. Mark slowed down so we could snap photos. He waved at an old man outside the bakery and they actually waved back, which made me smile for no real reason. By the time we reached Rotorua and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, the air had changed — thicker somehow, with that sulphur smell you can’t ignore (not gross exactly… just different). Walking past bubbling mud pools felt like being on another planet. The Champagne Pool really does look unreal — orange edges, steam drifting sideways in the wind. I tried to take a photo but it never looks right on screen.

After all that heat and noise from the earth itself (those vents hiss louder than you’d guess), sinking into a cedar tub at Secret Spot was almost too quiet at first. You hear birds, maybe someone laughing far off through the trees. The water’s hot but not scalding — just perfect after walking all morning. I leaned back against the wood and watched light flicker through leaves overhead. Didn’t talk much then; nobody did. That stillness sticks with me even now.
