What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it got when we left Alta’s center behind—just the crunch of snow under boots and that weird, electric hush you get up north. Our guide, Øyvind, grinned at us in the dark and pointed out the faint outline of the Cathedral of the Northern Lights before we even started talking about auroras. He explained how unpredictable they are—“Sometimes we drive far, sometimes they’re just waiting for us,” he said. I liked that honesty. It made me feel like we were really hunting for something rare.

I’d expected to be cold, but they handed out these ridiculous (but warm) suits and boots—mine squeaked every step. The van windows fogged up from all our breath as we drove along Altafjord, headlights catching tiny ice crystals in the air. Someone asked if we’d really see anything tonight; Øyvind shrugged and said most nights are lucky here, but “the sky decides.” There was this moment when we stopped beside a frozen field—no city lights at all—and he poured us hot chocolate that tasted extra sweet after breathing in so much cold air. He told stories about Sami reindeer herders and old war bunkers nearby; I tried to repeat one Sami word and everyone laughed (I definitely butchered it).

When the Northern Lights finally showed up—just a thin green ribbon at first—I felt my heart jump. We stood there not really talking, just watching as it grew brighter over the fjord. Some people tried to take photos but honestly, nothing on my phone looked right compared to what was happening above us. The fire crackled behind me and someone passed around sandwiches; I barely noticed eating because I kept glancing up. Even now, I still think about how quiet everyone got when those colors moved overhead—it’s hard to explain unless you’ve been there.
