What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the sound — a low, slow rumble as a container ship slid through the Miraflores Locks. Our guide, Andrés, leaned over the railing with us and explained how the Panama Canal works (honestly, it’s wilder than I thought). The air smelled faintly metallic and warm, like rain on old machinery. I kept thinking about how many people from all over must have stood here, just watching boats squeeze through this narrow passage. It felt weirdly peaceful.

We took our time wandering Casco Viejo after that. The bricks underfoot were uneven and warm from the sun — you could hear music drifting from open windows and someone selling raspados on a corner. Andrés pointed out bullet holes in an old wall (from the 1989 invasion), then told us where to find his favorite coffee spot. I tried to order in Spanish but tripped over my words; he laughed and helped me out. The coffee was strong enough to wake up my jetlagged brain.

The Amador Causeway came last — those four little islands stitched together with leftover rocks from digging the canal. There was a breeze off the Pacific that tugged at my shirt, and we stopped for a minute just to watch pelicans swoop over the water. You can see both city skyline and jungle from there; it’s kind of surreal. If you’re on a layover or just short on time in Panama City, this tour covers so much without feeling rushed. I still think about that view back toward downtown — all glass towers against tangled green hills — every now and then.
