What’s the experience like?

The van pulled up outside our little hotel in Miraflores just as the sun was barely thinking about rising. I’d been nervously checking my phone every few minutes — you know that feeling when you’re worried your ride won’t show? But there he was, our driver, waving and smiling like it was midday. He greeted us with a soft “buenos días” and took my suitcase (which felt heavier than when we arrived — souvenirs, probably). The air still smelled faintly salty from the ocean, and the city was mostly quiet except for one old man sweeping the sidewalk.

I honestly didn’t expect the drive to Jorge Chavez International Airport to feel so calm. Our driver chatted a bit in Spanish, asking if we’d slept at all (not really), then let us drift into silence as we passed through San Isidro and then Barranco — I caught a glimpse of some street art I’d missed before. It’s funny how leaving somewhere makes you notice things differently. The traffic hadn’t started yet, so we made good time. I kept glancing at my boarding pass just in case, but he seemed to know exactly how long it would take.

We got to the airport with plenty of time before our flight. There wasn’t any rush or confusion — just that slightly bittersweet feeling of saying goodbye to Lima after a week of pisco sours and long walks by the sea. Our driver helped us unload and wished us “buen viaje.” I still think about that quiet morning sometimes — how simple it was, but how much it mattered not to worry about missing our flight.
