What’s the experience like?

We’d barely stepped onto the yacht at Marina do Freixo when our captain handed me a glass of vinho verde—cold, a little fizzy, just what I needed after wandering Porto’s hills all morning. The river was quieter than I expected, just a few gulls overhead and that gentle slap of water against the hull. Our guide (Miguel, born-and-bred in Gaia) pointed out the old warehouses where port wine ages—he said you can still smell it on humid days. I tried to catch it in the air but mostly got river and something salty from downstream.

Passing under the Dom Luís I Bridge felt surreal—those iron arches look even bigger from below, almost like they’re swallowing up the sky. Miguel told us about Edgar Cardoso’s Arrábida Bridge too, how locals used to bet whether it’d hold up when it first opened (it did). We drifted past Ribeira’s colored houses stacked like toy blocks; someone waved from a balcony and I waved back without thinking. There was this weirdly peaceful moment near São Pedro da Afurada—just fishermen mending nets and a dog barking at nothing. The city noise faded behind us.

I didn’t expect to like the snacks so much—a board with sheep cheese, smoked sausage, olives that actually tasted different from home. The port wine was sweeter than I’m used to but went down easy while we floated by Foz do Douro where the river meets the Atlantic. Sun on my face, wind picking up a bit—I wrapped myself in one of their blankets and just sat there for a while, not talking. On the way back, nobody said much. It felt good to let Porto drift by like that.
