What’s the experience like?

First thing I remember is our guide Ana waving us over near Clérigos Tower, already holding a little paper bag of something fried. She handed one to me — “try this, bolinho de bacalhau” — and watched my face as I bit in. Salty, warm, kind of fluffy inside. She grinned when I tried to say it back in Portuguese (I think I mangled it). There was this early-morning dampness in the air that made the city stones smell almost metallic.

We wandered down narrow lanes toward Bolhão Market, Ana pointing out tiled facades and telling us how the old fishmongers used to shout out prices before cell phones. Inside the market was chaos in the best way: people bargaining, fruit scents mixing with coffee and something sharp — maybe cheese? We stopped at a tiny stall for our second tasting (I lost count after five), sipping vinho verde while an old man behind the counter told Ana a joke I only half understood but still laughed at. The food just kept coming — chouriço on crusty bread, creamy cheese with fig jam, some stew that tasted like home even though it wasn’t mine.

I didn’t expect to feel full so quickly or to learn so much about Porto’s food history just by eating my way through it. At one point Ana explained why locals love francesinha sandwiches — “it’s not healthy,” she admitted, “but it’s happiness.” By the time we reached dessert (pastéis de nata dusted with cinnamon), my jeans felt tight but I couldn’t stop grinning. The last sip of tawny port lingered longer than I thought it would. Still thinking about that view from outside Clérigos Tower — city rooftops stretching out under gray clouds, everyone moving slow for once.
