What’s the experience like?

We were already rolling through Lisbon’s sleepy morning streets before my coffee kicked in — our guide, Joana, waving us into a little minivan that somehow felt less like a tour bus and more like piling in with friends. The drive out to Sintra was quiet at first, just the hum of tires and that soft Portuguese light sneaking through the windows. I remember catching the first glimpse of Pena Palace way up on the hill — all those colors stacked against the green — and thinking, “Is that real?” Joana laughed when I asked if people actually lived there once (they did, apparently), and then she started telling us stories about kings who loved foggy mornings. I swear you could almost smell the moss as we climbed up.

Pena Palace itself is kind of wild — tiles under your hands, bright yellow walls that look painted by someone half-dreaming. We wandered terraces where clouds drifted right past our faces; it was chilly but not cold, just enough to make my hands tingle on the stone railings. Afterward we wound down into Sintra town for a bit of free time. I got lost in a bakery with these little almond pastries called travesseiros (I probably pronounced it wrong — the woman behind the counter smiled anyway). The air smelled sweet and a bit earthy from all the rain that morning.

Later at Quinta da Regaleira, Joana led us through gardens so tangled they felt enchanted. There’s this well — the Initiation Well — spiraling down into darkness, damp stone under your fingers as you walk. Someone in our group tried singing inside and it echoed weirdly up around us; we all laughed but honestly it was kind of eerie too. By the time we reached Cabo da Roca, wind whipping hair everywhere and ocean roaring below those cliffs, I was tired but didn’t want it to end yet. Standing there at Europe’s edge… I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
