What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the water to look that blue — almost fake, honestly. We met at Villa Marina in Fajardo (early, I’m not a morning person), and there was this sleepy buzz as people shuffled onto the Tobias boat. Our guide, Luis, cracked a joke about “island time” and handed out snorkels with this big grin. The engine started up and the salty air hit me right away. It’s only about 20 minutes out to Icacos Island but something about being on that 43-foot boat made it feel like we’d already left regular life behind.

Once we anchored near the reef, Luis gave us a quick rundown — he even helped me adjust my mask when I fumbled with it (thanks for not laughing). The water was cool but not cold, and I could hear muffled splashes and someone laughing through their snorkel. Fish darted around under us — yellow ones mostly, but I’m no expert. After a while I got hungry and climbed back up for lunch. The deli buffet wasn’t fancy but after swimming everything tasted better — fruit was sweet and there were cookies too. Rum punch appeared in my hand before I even asked for it. That’s service.

We moved closer to the shore after eating. Some people stretched out on towels, others wandered off along the sand. I sat by myself for a bit just watching the light bounce off the water — you know that feeling when you’re warm from the sun but there’s still a breeze? That’s what I remember most now. Someone passed around another round of piña coladas and we all just… hung out. No rush to get anywhere.

The ride back felt slower somehow, like nobody wanted it to end yet. Luis pointed out some pelicans gliding low over the waves and told us how locals call Icacos their “backyard escape.” He said he comes here on his days off too — made me wish I could do the same.
