What’s the experience like?

The first time I saw Bran Castle up close, it was early morning—mist still hanging around the turrets, a few crows making noise above the gate. Our guide, Andrei, joked that the real vampires here are just the souvenir sellers (he wasn’t wrong). Inside, you’ll notice how narrow some stairways get—almost like they’re trying to keep secrets. The rooms feel lived-in, not just museum pieces. You can smell old wood and something faintly sweet from the nearby pastry stand outside. It’s easy to see why people link this place to Dracula, but honestly, the real stories are even better than the fiction.

Peles Castle is another world entirely. We drove through Sinaia’s pine forests—the air felt cooler there, even in summer. The castle itself looks like something out of a fairy tale, but with details you only catch up close: stained glass windows reflecting sunlight onto marble floors, carved wooden ceilings that must’ve taken ages to finish. Our guide pointed out where Romanian royals used to host their guests—there’s a photo of Queen Marie in one room that stuck with me. On Mondays and Tuesdays, we couldn’t go inside (they’re closed), but walking around the gardens was still worth it. If you’re lucky with timing, you might hear church bells from Sinaia Monastery drifting over.
