What’s the experience like?

Our driver showed up right on time at our hotel—9am sharp, but not in a rush. I’d barely finished my kopi. The city felt awake already as we zipped toward Chinatown, windows down just enough to catch that blend of incense and street food. Our guide, Priya, pointed out the old shophouses painted in colors I can’t name (one was almost turquoise? teal?). She told us about her grandmother’s favorite bakery here—sounded like half the neighborhood still lines up for those buns. I tried to say “ni hao” to a shopkeeper; she grinned and corrected me gently.

Next stop: the National Orchid Garden inside the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect—I’m not really a flower person—but walking through those paths with 60,000 orchids around you is something else. It’s humid and quiet except for birds somewhere overhead and the soft crunch of gravel underfoot. Priya showed us a hybrid named after Princess Diana (I didn’t even know that was a thing). There’s this moment when you look up and realize how green Singapore really is—like the city just disappears for a minute.

Little India hit different—louder somehow, with music drifting from open shop doors and the smell of spices everywhere. We passed stalls selling marigold garlands and gold bangles; Priya explained why locals call it Tekka (I butchered the Tamil pronunciation—she laughed). She waved at someone across the street who waved back like they do this every day. By the time we reached the colonial district near Parliament, my shirt was sticking to my back but I didn’t care much. We wandered along the riverbanks where office workers were already queuing for lunch. Then it was back in the van, air-con blasting, feeling like we’d seen about five versions of Singapore in just half a day—and honestly, I still think about that orchid garden sometimes.
