What’s the experience like?

I didn’t really know what to expect from the Atlantis Dunes — I’d seen photos, but standing there, the sand looked almost too white, like someone had turned up the brightness. We met our guide just past the parking lot (he waved us over with a big grin), and after a quick rundown on the quad bikes — which honestly made me a bit nervous at first — we set off. The engine’s rumble was louder than I thought it would be, but it felt good, like you could actually feel it in your chest. There was this salty breeze coming off the coast, mixing with that dry dune smell — kind of sharp, not unpleasant.

Our guide (I think his name was Teboho?) rode ahead at first but kept looking back to check on us. He pointed out some weird little plants poking through the sand — apparently they survive here somehow, even though it looks like nothing should grow. At one point he stopped so we could try going up a steeper dune; I stalled halfway up and everyone laughed (including me). The best part was when we paused at the top of this ridge and you could see all the way to Table Mountain in the distance — not something I’d expected on a “day trip Atlantis Dunes quad bike” experience. It was quiet up there except for wind whistling past my helmet.

By the end I was covered in fine white dust and grinning like an idiot. My hands were still buzzing from gripping the handlebars too tight. Teboho told us a bit about how locals use this area for weekend escapes — he said sometimes people come just to watch sunset over the dunes (I get why now).
