What’s the experience like?

I still remember the sound the burners made as we waited in the half-light — kind of like a dragon exhaling, but friendlier. The grass was wet under my shoes (should’ve worn thicker socks) and you could smell coffee somewhere close by. We were in the Cradle of Humankind, about 30 minutes from Joburg, and honestly, I hadn’t really expected to feel nervous until I saw that balloon start to inflate. Our pilot, Thabo, kept things light — he joked about his “balloon driver’s license” and told us to look out for giraffes once we were up.

The lift-off was quieter than I thought it would be. Just this slow, gentle rising — suddenly you’re above the trees and there’s mist hanging over the rivers below. You can see herds moving across the open grasslands; someone pointed out zebras (I almost missed them because they blend in so well). There was this moment when everything went quiet except for birds calling from somewhere far off. I tried to take photos but mostly just stared — it’s hard to describe how wide everything feels from up there. Thabo told us stories about the animals and how four of the Big Five live around these reserves. He spotted a rhino before any of us did — said he’d been flying here for years and could tell by the shape moving through the brush.

After about an hour floating with the wind (which felt much shorter), we landed smoother than I expected — not sure if that’s always the case or if Thabo’s just that good. There was sparkling wine waiting for us right after we climbed out (someone tried to say cheers in Zulu, which made everyone laugh). Then breakfast at the lodge: proper buffet with eggs, fruit, pastries — I probably ate too much but didn’t care. People swapped stories about what they’d seen; one couple swore they spotted a lion but nobody else backed them up.
