What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed when we landed in Johannesburg was the quiet hum of the arrivals hall — not as frantic as I’d expected after a long-haul flight. There was Sipho, holding my name on a board (I always wonder if they’ll spell it right — he did), smiling like he actually meant it. He’d tracked our flight so even though we were almost an hour late out of Heathrow, he was just there waiting, no stress at all. The air outside felt warmer than I remembered from last time, kind of sweet with that city dust smell.

We piled our bags into the back — more than I’d admit to packing — and the car was spotless, cool inside. Sipho asked if we wanted music or just quiet; honestly, after that flight, silence sounded perfect. He told us about the neighborhoods as we drove toward Rosebank — pointed out where he grew up, laughed about Joburg traffic (“You get used to it or you go mad,” he said). It’s a short ride if you’re lucky with traffic but somehow it felt longer in a good way. Maybe because someone else was handling everything for once.

I didn’t expect to feel so looked after by something as simple as an airport transfer in Johannesburg. When we pulled up to our hotel and Sipho handed me my bag (he wouldn’t let me carry it), I realized how much those small things matter when you’re tired and far from home. Still think about that first breath of city air and how easy it all felt for once.
