What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous stepping off the train at Barcelona Sants — it’s busy, and my Spanish is pretty shaky. But there was my name on a card, right where they said he’d be. The driver, Jordi, waved and smiled like he actually meant it (not that stiff airport smile). He took my suitcase before I could even fumble for the handle. There’s something about being met by a real person after hours of travel — you just breathe easier.

The car smelled faintly of lemon, which sounds random but honestly felt comforting after the metallic tang of the train. Jordi asked if I wanted music or silence — I went for quiet, just to watch Barcelona slide past the window. He pointed out Montjuïc in the distance and told me how his grandmother used to walk up there every Sunday. I tried to say “gràcies” properly; Jordi grinned and said it was close enough. The ride was maybe 20 minutes? Hard to tell — time gets weird when you’re tired but excited.

I didn’t expect him to know so much about the city. He gave me tips on where locals actually eat near Plaça Catalunya (not those tourist traps), and warned me about pickpockets without sounding preachy. The whole thing felt more like getting picked up by a distant cousin than some anonymous taxi service. And yeah, having everything prepaid meant no awkward wallet shuffling or meter-watching at the end — just a quick “bona nit” and I was at my hotel door.
