What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the weird wobble under my feet as I tried the Segway outside the little office in the Gothic Quarter — honestly, I was nervous I’d crash into someone’s dog. Our guide, Marta, just grinned and said, “Everyone looks like that at first.” She showed us how to lean and steer, and after a few minutes it felt almost natural. There was this faint smell of coffee drifting from somewhere nearby, mixing with the sea air. It was still early enough that the stone alleys weren’t crowded yet.

We zipped past old Roman walls and stopped at the Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy — Marta told us a story about sailors lighting candles there before heading out to sea. I liked how she didn’t rush; she’d pause for questions or just let us look around. The city felt different from this angle, sort of floating above the cobbles. At Port Vell, you could hear gulls fighting over scraps and see locals jogging along the water. The Columbus Monument looked even taller when you’re right next to it on two wheels.

I definitely butchered some Catalan names (Marta laughed when I tried “Ciutadella”), but nobody seemed to mind. We rolled under the Arc de Triomf — red brick against blue sky — then into Ciutadella Park where kids were chasing bubbles and an old man played guitar near the fountain. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for birds and distant voices, and I just wanted to stay there longer. The Segway tour made Barcelona feel smaller somehow, like you could actually get your arms around it.
