What’s the experience like?

“Wait, is that really the Mosque-Cathedral?” I blurted out as we zipped around a corner in our little electric tuk tuk. The driver—Antonio, who grew up just blocks away—just grinned and nodded, letting us soak up that first glimpse. It was quieter than I expected inside the tuk tuk; you could actually hear people chatting on the street and smell that mix of orange blossoms and coffee drifting from somewhere nearby. We’d started at Las Tendillas Square, which Antonio called “the city’s living room”—and honestly, it did feel like everyone in Córdoba passed through there at least once an hour.

We rolled past old stone buildings and stopped for a minute at the Roman Bridge. Our guide explained how it connected both sides of Córdoba for centuries—20, he said, like it was nothing. There were kids kicking a ball near the edge and an older couple watching the river; I tried to imagine what this spot must’ve looked like when it was part of the Via Augusta. The breeze picked up right then, and for some reason I remember thinking how smooth the stone felt under my hand as I leaned out for a photo (which turned out crooked—classic me).

The Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs looked almost too solid to be real—like something out of a storybook, but then Antonio told us about one of the monarchs’ daughters being born there, and suddenly it felt more human. He pointed out details I would’ve missed on my own: carvings above doorways, shadows in unexpected places. The tuk tuk made it easy to get close without feeling rushed or stuck behind crowds—plus it was kind of fun watching people do double-takes as we rolled by in this silent little cart.

I didn’t expect to feel so connected to Córdoba after just a couple hours. Maybe it was hearing Antonio’s stories or maybe just seeing everything from such an open seat—not behind glass or headphones. Either way, I still think about that view of the Mosque-Cathedral lit up against the sky as we circled back toward where we started… can’t really explain why.
