Expect real stories, small surprises, and moments you’ll remember longer than you expect.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect Barranco de las Vacas to look so much like something out of a sci-fi movie — those striped walls, all pinks and oranges, almost glowing in the morning light. Inés (our guide) grinned when she saw my face. “It surprises everyone,” she said. We took turns squeezing through the narrowest part for that famous photo, but honestly, it was quieter than I thought it’d be. Just the sound of our shoes on sand and a few birds somewhere up above. The air felt cool down there, even though the sun was already hot up top.

After that, Juanjo drove us toward Agüimes. The road twisted past fields and little stone houses with faded blue doors. He told stories about the first people who lived here — I only half-followed because I kept staring out at the landscape (it’s hard not to). When we reached this hidden cave he knew about, it smelled faintly earthy and old — like wet stone and dust. I tried to pronounce its name; Li laughed when I butchered it in Spanish. There were carvings on the wall that Juanjo pointed out with his flashlight. It made me think about how long people have been making marks here, just… living.

The last stop was this tiny hamlet outside Agüimes. Someone’s dog barked at us from behind a fence but wagged its tail anyway. We tasted some cheese that Inés brought along (salty, crumbly — nothing like what I get at home) and stood under a fig tree while villagers waved as they passed by tractor or bike or just walking slow in the heat. Life seemed slower here; nobody rushed us off to the next thing. I still think about that view across the valley — dry grass, whitewashed walls, a sky so wide it almost felt fake.
