What’s the experience like?

I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous getting off the plane at Bandaranaike — that half-awake, sticky feeling after a long flight. But right outside arrivals, there was my name on a sign (spelled right, which I weirdly appreciated). Our driver, Sunil, waved like he already knew me. He grabbed my bag before I could even protest and led me out into the warm night air. The smell hit first — humid, with this faint sweetness I couldn’t place.

The drive from Colombo airport to Negombo isn’t far (maybe 20 minutes if traffic’s kind), but it felt like its own little intro to Sri Lanka. Sunil pointed out temples glowing in the darkness and laughed when I tried to pronounce “Negombo” the local way (I definitely didn’t nail it). There was cold bottled water waiting for me in the car, and he even offered the WiFi password before I asked — lifesaver for letting family know I’d made it. The AC was on just enough; not freezing like some airport taxis can be.

I kept watching the road signs flick by in Sinhala script — so different from home — while Sunil told me about his favorite seafood spots near the beach. He seemed genuinely proud of his town. By the time we pulled up at my hotel, I felt more awake than when we started. Not sure why that ride stuck with me, but maybe it’s just how easy it all felt after a long journey.
