What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was how the air in Lucerne felt—sort of crisp, but not sharp, and you could smell bread from a bakery somewhere nearby. Our guide, Stefan, waved from the little Etuktuk parked right by the river. I’d never been in one before (outside Asia anyway), and it rattled a bit as we set off through the Old Town. The cobblestones made my coffee tremble in its cup—should’ve finished it first—but honestly, that just made me laugh.

We zipped past the Chapel Bridge while Stefan told us stories about fires and old paintings—there’s something about hearing those details while you’re actually rolling under the wooden beams. He pointed out the Hofkirche and asked if we could guess what weighed 383 kilos (I got it wrong; it was some ancient church bell). The city walls loomed up suddenly with their towers from the 14th century—felt weirdly medieval for such a modern place. At one point, an older woman smiled at us from her window and waved; I still think about that tiny moment of connection.

The Lion Monument was quieter than I expected. People mostly whispered there—maybe because of the way the lion looks so sad? Stefan explained why it matters to locals (I’d butcher his German if I tried to repeat it). We also cut through some neighborhoods tourists usually skip—saw kids playing football in an alley, smelled laundry soap drifting from open windows. It wasn’t all grand sights; sometimes it was just little things like that.
