What’s the experience like?

He handed me a tiny plastic stool just as the rumble started — not even a warning, just this low vibration underfoot. I was still chewing on something sweet (I think it was grilled banana?) when our guide, Nok, nudged us closer to the edge of the Maeklong Railway Market. The vendors were already moving — umbrellas folded in one practiced sweep, baskets shuffled back from the tracks. I’d seen videos but standing there, right up against those narrow rails as the train crawled past with barely an inch to spare… it’s hard to explain how weirdly normal it felt for everyone except me. Nok grinned and said, “Every day, same train,” like it was nothing.

We piled back into our car — air-con blasting, thank god — and I tried to process what just happened. It’s only about twenty minutes to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market but somehow my brain was still stuck on that train squeezing through mangoes and chilies. At the floating market, we hopped onto this wobbly wooden boat (I nearly lost my hat) and drifted down canals lined with boats selling everything from fried bananas to neon dragonfruit. The smell of coconut hung in the air. Nok insisted we try coconut ice cream (“Homemade!” she promised) and mango sticky rice so sweet it almost hurt my teeth. I probably ate too much but… well, you’re supposed to, right?

I liked watching the vendors’ hands — quick and sure as they passed change or sliced fruit without ever really looking up. There’s noise everywhere: engines sputtering, someone shouting prices in Thai, kids laughing behind a pile of green mangoes. It’s messy in a way that feels alive. Nok laughed when I tried saying “Damnoen Saduak” properly; I definitely butchered it but she didn’t mind.

The drive back felt quieter than before. Maybe it was the heat or maybe just that feeling you get after seeing something you know you’ll remember longer than any photo could manage. I still think about that moment when the train brushed past my elbow — how ordinary it seemed for everyone else there.
