What’s the experience like?

"Is that really the rock from the movie?" That’s what I blurted out when our guide, Lek, pointed at the spiky limestone sticking out of Phang Nga Bay. He just grinned and nodded — I think he’s heard that question a thousand times. The morning started with him picking us up right at our hotel in Phuket. I was still half-asleep but the van smelled faintly of lemongrass air freshener, which helped. By the time we reached the pier, the sun was already bouncing off the water and there were these longtail boats lined up like colorful dragonflies.

Riding out on our own private longtail felt pretty surreal — wind in my face, salt spray everywhere (my hair never stood a chance). Lek kept pointing out little things: a fisherman mending his nets, kids waving from a stilt house. When we finally got to James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan), there were a few other boats but it didn’t feel crowded. The “nail rock” is smaller than you’d expect but weirdly dramatic — I snapped about fifty photos before realizing everyone else was just quietly staring at it. There’s something about that place that makes you go quiet for a second.

Lunch was at Koh Panyee, this floating village where everything — houses, shops, even a football pitch — balances above the water on rickety stilts. We had fried fish with chili and rice; honestly, I still think about that sauce sometimes. Lek tried to teach me how to say thank you in Thai (“khop khun krab”) but I probably butchered it because he laughed so hard he nearly dropped his tea.

The afternoon was all caves and lagoons — we paddled through Tam Lod in canoes (I kept bumping my head on stalactites) and drifted into Panak Lagoon where everything suddenly went green and echoey-quiet except for birds somewhere overhead. The last cave stop was called Ice Cream Cave — no actual ice cream but the rocks looked like melting scoops under your flashlight. By then my arms were tired and my shirt was damp from humidity or maybe just excitement? Hard to tell.
