What’s the experience like?

There was this gentle clatter of ropes and the low hum of Captain Yusuf’s voice as we stepped onto his boat in Bodrum. I remember the way the morning sun bounced off the water—kind of blinding at first—and how Yusuf grinned when he handed us tea. He joked about his “18 meters of happiness,” and honestly, it did feel like our own floating world for a while. The Bodrum Peninsula looked different from out here—quieter, softer somehow. We left the pier between yawns and laughter, drifting toward Black Island. Forty minutes went by fast; I kept staring at the coastline slipping away behind us.

Black Island was nothing like the crowded beaches back in town. The water was so clear you could see every pebble on the bottom (and my awkward attempts at snorkeling didn’t go unnoticed—Yusuf just laughed and handed me a better mask). There were no big tour boats around, just us and this weird silence that wasn’t really silent—gulls calling, water slapping gently at the hull. Lunch happened at Rabbit Bay after we’d paddled around a bit; fish straight from the grill, bread still warm, tomatoes that actually tasted like tomatoes. I tried to say “thank you” in Turkish—Yusuf smiled but I’m pretty sure I messed it up.

Red Bay came last. By then we were sun-warmed and a little sleepy from swimming too much (is that possible?). Fruit arrived on a plate that looked almost too pretty to eat—melon slices glistening in the shade. There was this moment where everyone just sat quietly watching light flicker across the waves, nobody saying much. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
