What’s the experience like?

“You’re not nervous?” our driver grinned at me in the dark, just before sunrise outside Göreme. Honestly, I was — but mostly excited. The van smelled faintly of strong tea and dust from the road. We’d barely finished yawning when we saw the balloons being filled, huge and glowing like lanterns across the field. Our guide, Selim, chatted with us about which valley we might fly over — apparently it depends on the wind and what the aviation folks decide that morning. I’d never realized how much weather could change things here.

When we finally climbed into the basket (after some wobbly attempts — they’re higher than they look), there was this hush as the burners started up. The sound is loud but weirdly comforting. We drifted up over Cat Valley instead of Göreme because of some last-minute wind shift — Selim explained it’s safer that way, and honestly, it didn’t matter once we were up there. The fairy chimneys looked soft in the early light, almost like they’d been painted on. Someone pointed out a shepherd down below waving his stick at goats, and for a second it felt like floating through someone else’s dream.

I kept trying to take photos but gave up after a while — nothing really catches how cold your hands get gripping the edge of the basket or how quiet everything feels except for those occasional bursts from the flame overhead. After landing (a bit bumpier than I expected — still laughing about how my shoe got stuck), they handed us glasses of fizzy apple juice and everyone tried to pronounce “Soganlı” right. Selim laughed at my attempt; I probably butchered it.
