What’s the experience like?

Hands pressed to the cool marble, I tried to take in the scale of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — it’s hard to describe how white everything feels in the morning sun. Our guide, Ahmed, handed me a scarf at the entrance (I’d forgotten mine) and explained why everyone moves so quietly inside. The air smelled faintly of rose water and something I couldn’t place. We wandered under those endless domes while he pointed out little details in the tilework — apparently each flower pattern means something different. I kept lagging behind to stare up at the chandeliers.

Driving into Abu Dhabi city center felt like shifting centuries in a few blocks. At Heritage Village, there was this old man weaving baskets who grinned when my friend tried (and failed) to copy his technique — he just shook his head and laughed. The sand here is finer than Dubai’s somehow, or maybe it was just the way it clung to my sandals. Ahmed told us stories about life before oil; honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so curious about that part. We stopped for photos at Emirates Palace (the guards were friendly but strict about where we could stand), then watched wooden dhows bobbing at the harbor — their paint peeling but still bright against all that glassy water.

Saadiyat Island was quieter than I thought it’d be — lots of cranes and half-built museums, but you can see what they’re aiming for. There’s this sense of newness everywhere, mixed with old traditions that don’t quite fit together but somehow work. On Yas Island we skipped Ferrari World (not really car people), but snapped a few photos anyway because… well, everyone does. The drive back to Dubai was sleepy; I kept replaying those moments in my head — especially that first step onto the mosque’s marble floor. It’s strange what sticks with you after a day like that.
