What’s the experience like?

“You ever tried dune bashing?” That’s how our guide, Kareem, broke the ice as we climbed into his 4x4 just outside Dubai. I’d barely finished my coffee when we hit those first sandy waves — honestly, I gripped the seat tighter than I’d like to admit. The desert looked endless and somehow softer in the late afternoon light. There was this faint smell of spice and engine oil hanging in the air at the quad biking area; some folks went straight for it, but I just watched for a bit — sand in my shoes already.

We all ended up laughing at ourselves during the short camel ride (my camel was called Sultan and he seemed bored of tourists). Kareem told us about his childhood here — apparently he used to run down these dunes barefoot. Sand boarding was trickier than it looked; I landed on my back once and got a mouthful of grit. There were families from everywhere, kids shrieking in every language you can imagine. Someone nearby was making tea over a little burner — that cardamom scent drifted over and I wished I’d asked for a cup.

The evening part felt almost surreal. After sunset, low tables appeared out of nowhere and suddenly there was music — not too loud, just enough to make you notice. The BBQ dinner was better than I expected (I still think about that smoky lamb skewer), and there were unlimited soft drinks which came in handy after all that sand. The belly dancer spun so fast her skirt blurred; later, during the fire show, everyone went quiet except for one kid who kept gasping at each flame trick. It wasn’t perfect — some things felt touristy — but sitting there under that huge sky with sand still stuck to my ankles… yeah, it sticks with you.
