What’s the experience like?

What does silence sound like at 5am in the Ras Al Khaimah desert? I didn’t know either—until we stood there, shoes crunching on cold sand, watching the balloon slowly puff up in the blue-grey light. Our pilot, Mark (British accent, dry humor), explained how the wind decides where we’ll go. I was still half-asleep but the smell of propane snapped me awake. There’s something weirdly calming about seeing a huge balloon come alive while everyone else is just blinking at the horizon.

The actual hot air balloon flight felt nothing like I expected. You sort of drift—no engine noise, just an occasional whoosh from the burner and then quiet again. Below us, the dunes looked soft enough to sleep on (they’re not). We spotted oryx picking their way through scrub and some camels that seemed completely unimpressed by us floating overhead. My hands were freezing but I couldn’t stop waving at a kid on a donkey who waved back like it was totally normal to see balloons in his morning.

Landing was smoother than I thought—no wild bump, just a gentle slide into sand. The crew handed out glasses of sparkling grape juice (I tried to say “cheers” in Arabic; Mark laughed and corrected me) and we got our flight certificates signed right there. There were soap bubbles for kids, which honestly made even the adults smile. The short desert safari after—about 20 minutes of bouncing through dunes in an air-conditioned 4x4—was more fun than I want to admit. I still think about that first view from above when I’m back home stuck in traffic.
