What’s the experience like?

“That’s Balto — he’s sort of a local hero,” our driver said, slowing the horse just enough for me to snap a picture. I’d seen photos of Central Park before but sitting up there, bundled under a warm blanket (it was colder than I’d expected for April), everything felt more alive. The clop of hooves mixed with distant saxophone notes from somewhere near Bethesda Terrace. Our guide had this way of telling stories that made even the pigeons seem like old New Yorkers.

I kept thinking I’d feel silly riding in a carriage — but honestly, it was peaceful. People waved or took pictures as we rolled past the ice skating rink and the carousel. At one point, my partner tried to ask about Strawberry Fields in his best Beatles accent; our guide just grinned and shared a bit about John Lennon living nearby. The city felt softer from inside that carriage, like you’re tucked away but still part of everything.

We stopped for photos at Cherry Hill — the view over the lake is something I still think about. There were cherry blossoms just starting to open, and for a second it smelled sweet, almost like spring finally arriving in New York. I could hear someone laughing on a bike behind us, and our horse snorted like he was bored of standing still (relatable). After that we drifted past Sheep’s Meadow and ended up near Columbus Circle — time went fast, but not rushed.
