What’s the experience like?

We were already rolling through Uptown Charlotte before I’d even figured out how to buckle the seatbelt on this funny little open-air minibus. Our guide, Marcus, waved at someone on the sidewalk (they waved back—maybe everyone knows him?) and pointed out the Bank of America Stadium just as the morning air started to smell like coffee and cut grass. I didn’t expect to feel so… part of things, watching people hurry by while we zipped along in our seven-seater cart. You catch snippets of conversation, a dog barking somewhere near Independence Square, sunlight flickering through skyscrapers. It’s not quiet, but it’s not noisy either—just alive.

We stopped at the NASCAR Hall of Fame and Marcus told us about his uncle who used to sneak into races back in the day—he laughed when he realized he’d said too much (“Don’t tell my mom!”). The Mint Museum was next; we didn’t go inside but peered up at its glassy front while a couple took wedding photos nearby. There’s something about seeing these places from an open cart that makes them feel less distant—like you’re visiting old friends instead of checking off sights. Fourth Ward was my favorite part: tree-lined streets, painted porches, those creaky old houses with stories you can almost hear if you listen close enough. The breeze there smelled faintly sweet—maybe magnolias? Or maybe I imagined it.

Kids on scooters raced us for half a block near Discovery Place Science (they won), and someone shouted “Welcome to Charlotte!” as we passed Luminous Lane. I tried to pronounce “Levine Center for the Arts” with a Southern drawl; Marcus shook his head and grinned (“Stick to your day job”). We had time for photos at Old Settlers’ Cemetery—the stones are worn smooth, names fading but still there if you squint. It felt good to slow down for a minute before heading back through Uptown’s glass-and-steel canyon. Honestly, I thought I’d be more interested in the museums or stadiums, but what sticks with me is that feeling of being woven into the city for a couple hours—wind in your face, strangers waving, Marcus telling stories he probably shouldn’t.
