What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the light—sort of soft and green, like it filtered through a thousand fir needles before landing on us. Our guide, Mark (who grew up nearby and knew every twist in the road), had us laughing about “million dollar restrooms” as we pulled up to Vista House. The marble inside was cold under my hands, but outside it was all wind and that huge sweep of river below. I tried to take a photo but honestly, it didn’t really catch what it felt like to stand there.

We wound along the Historic Columbia River Highway—windows down for that sharp smell of wet earth and something sweet I still can’t name. At Latourell Falls, Mark pointed out lichen that looked almost neon against the black basalt. The path was muddy in spots; I slipped once (just a little) and got mist on my glasses from the falls. There’s this moment when you hear nothing but water and your own breath—kind of grounding, you know?

Multnomah Falls was next—taller than I expected, roaring loud enough to drown out everything else. We stood on Benson Bridge while spray drifted up; my niece tried to count rainbows in the mist (she lost track at three). There were families everywhere—some speaking Spanish, some French—and everyone seemed a bit hushed looking up at all that water pouring down. Snacks came out back in the van—trail mix and cold water—which tasted better than it should have after hiking around.

Oneonta Gorge we mostly saw from the road (the creek looked freezing), but Mark told us about people wading through chest-deep water just to see hidden falls inside. He made it sound both wild and oddly normal for Oregon. On the way back, I kept thinking about how green everything was—even my shoes picked up moss somehow. It’s weird what sticks with you after a day trip like this.
