What’s the experience like?

I didn’t really expect to see a manatee’s whiskers up close. We slid our clear kayaks into Crystal River and there was this hush—like everyone was holding their breath, even the birds. Our guide, Jamie, grinned and pointed out the way the water shifted ahead of us. “That’s a big one,” she whispered, and sure enough, this gentle giant just floated under my kayak. I could see every dimple on its back through the hull. It’s weird how quiet it gets when you’re watching something that old and slow move right beneath you.

The clear kayak thing is honestly cooler than I thought—at first I worried it’d feel flimsy but it’s sturdy, and you can see turtles scooting along the bottom or fish darting around your paddle. The sun came out halfway through and turned everything this electric blue-green. Jamie told us about how Three Sisters Springs fills up with manatees in winter (we lucked out—it was peak season) but even in warmer months you can swim or snorkel in these springs. She handed out dry bags for our phones but said not to worry about photos—they’d send us professional ones later. I still laughed at my own face in one of them, mouth open like a kid.

There were only eight of us on the tour so it never felt crowded or rushed—just this slow drift through Kings Bay, listening to water slap against plastic and someone behind me quietly cursing their paddle technique (relatable). The air smelled clean, almost sweet from all the trees along the banks. At one point Jamie stopped us to talk about how important these springs are for wildlife—she actually volunteers here too, which made me trust what she said about keeping distance from the manatees.

I keep thinking about that moment when everything went quiet except for a single heron squawking somewhere behind us. If you’re looking for a day trip to Crystal River that feels personal but not staged, this clear kayak tour is probably it—even if you don’t pronounce “homosassa” right on your first try (I definitely didn’t).
