What’s the experience like?

I opened my eyes to that weird green-blue shimmer — you know the one — as we left Destin behind on this big 36-foot boat. The captain (I think his name was Mike?) pointed out a couple of dolphins right away, and everyone sort of forgot their phones for a second. The ride across Santa Rosa Sound wasn’t long but it felt like that in-between space where nobody’s thinking about work or laundry or anything except maybe sunscreen. Someone’s kid yelled about seeing a turtle but I just saw a shadow — could’ve been anything honestly.

Getting to Crab Island is kind of surreal. It’s not an island at all, more like this shallow sandbar where boats sort of anchor in a loose circle and everyone just… floats. Our guide tossed out these huge lily pads (I’d never seen one before — it’s basically a giant foam mat) and half the group immediately flopped on them like sea lions. There were pool noodles everywhere, frisbees flying around, someone brought their own cooler with snacks and drinks (no glass though, they made that clear). I tried to balance on the lily pad but ended up rolling off into the water — cold at first, then just perfect. There’s something about saltwater and laughter mixing together that sticks with you.

The crew kept checking if we needed water, which was nice because the sun does sneak up on you out there. There’s a big restroom onboard (not glamorous but way better than nothing), which I didn’t realize would matter until my niece needed it halfway through. I liked how nobody rushed us — we had four hours to drift or swim or just watch pelicans dive for fish nearby. At some point I lay back on the float staring up at the sky and thought about how easy it is to forget these simple kinds of afternoons exist.
