What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect Gig Harbor to feel so small-town, even after living near the coast for years. We met our captain right by the docks — he had that relaxed Pacific Northwest vibe, flannel and all. The boat itself was an old Navy vessel, which made me feel oddly safe (and a bit like I should salute someone). As we pulled away, you could smell salt and cedar mixed together, and there was this soft slap of water against the hull that made everyone go quiet for a second.

Our guide pointed out bald eagles circling overhead — I squinted up and honestly, I’d have missed them without him. He told us about the old bridge collapse (I’d never heard of “Galloping Gertie” before), and you could still see where the new bridges stretch across the water like ribbons. Passing under them felt surreal — you look up and realize how tiny you are compared to all that steel and sky. There were seals sunning themselves on rocks; someone next to me tried to get a photo but just ended up laughing because they kept slipping back into the water.

We drifted past Salmon Beach, where houses balance on wooden stilts right over the tide — it looked almost impossible, honestly. Our captain waved at a woman climbing what must’ve been fifty stairs up a cliff; she waved back like it was nothing. There’s a mermaid statue down there too (our guide joked she’s seen every storm). I still think about how peaceful it felt out there, with just gulls calling and distant trees lining the shore. The two hours went by faster than I thought they would — maybe because it didn’t feel like a tour so much as tagging along with someone who really knows these waters.
