What’s the experience like?

Hands covered in tiny glass dust, I hesitated before the first cut — Doug just nodded, like he’d seen this a hundred times. The studio sits above Kailua Kona’s coastline, so you catch these salty breezes through the open windows. Sheri laughed when I picked a wild pink for my sun catcher — apparently not everyone goes neon on their first try. There was music playing quietly somewhere behind us, something soft and local. Didn’t expect to feel so focused or so clumsy at the same time.

I kept glancing up at the ocean light shifting across the work table. It’s weirdly calming, watching other people pick out their glass pieces — some folks were there with kids, one guy was making a gift for his wife back home. Our guide showed us how to grind and foil the edges (I’m still not sure I did it right), but she let me take my time. Soldering was trickier than I thought — there’s this metallic smell that sticks to your hands after. Sheri said it always reminds her of her own first class years ago. When I finally held up my finished piece against the window, it caught all these odd colors from outside; not perfect, but I kind of love it anyway.
