What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the faint smell of cupcakes from somewhere down the hall—probably Cupcake A La Mode, our game guide joked. We’d just stepped into The Escape Game at Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, and honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. Our group got matched with another couple (they seemed just as nervous), and then our guide, Marcus, handed us a mission card with this sly grin like he already knew we’d get stuck on the submarine puzzle. I still think about that first clue—how none of us saw it coming.

We picked “The Depths” because someone said it was new and had a submarine theme (I’m a sucker for anything ocean-related). The room was colder than I thought it’d be, with these weird metallic sounds playing softly—like you’re actually underwater. At one point, my friend tried to force open a locked box before realizing the answer was right there on a sticker. Marcus buzzed in through the intercom: “You might want to look under the captain’s chair.” We all laughed, tension broke for a second. It’s funny how strangers become teammates when you’re racing against a clock.

After we escaped (barely—with three minutes left), we spilled out into the bright hallway blinking like moles. Someone suggested ice cream at Ice Cream Bae next door—I went for it even though it was barely noon. There’s something about solving puzzles together that makes you hungry, or maybe just happy to be outside again.
