What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to feel nervous stepping onto the When And If — it’s just a boat, right? But there’s something about all that polished wood and the way the crew greeted us (barefoot, sun-bleached hair, easy smiles) that made it feel like we were joining someone’s private tradition. The air smelled faintly of salt and sunscreen. We checked in right at the dock by the Waterfront Brewery — you can’t miss those masts with their flags fluttering. I kept glancing at my phone to check the time but then just… stopped caring.

Once we set off into the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the water turned this unreal shade of blue-green — almost cartoonish. Our captain told us stories about General Patton commissioning this schooner back in 1939 (I had no idea he was into boats). At one point, I tried helping raise a sail; let’s just say I’m not quitting my day job. My partner actually got to take the wheel for a bit, which made her grin like a kid. We spotted dolphins — or maybe it was just one dolphin circling back to show off, who knows? There were seabirds everywhere too, and someone pointed out what might’ve been a sea turtle but honestly it looked like a floating log until it moved.

There was this moment when we sailed past Mallory Square — you could hear distant music and laughter drifting over the water. People on shore waved as if they knew us. The crew poured everyone a glass of champagne (included in the sunset cruise), and for a few minutes nobody said much; we just watched the sun melt into the horizon. It wasn’t loud or dramatic — more like everything slowed down for a bit. I still think about that light on everyone’s faces.

If you’re looking for a crowded party boat vibe, this isn’t it. But if you want to feel like you’re borrowing someone else’s beautiful old yacht for an evening — maybe even steering it yourself — this Key West sunset cruise is pretty hard to forget.
