What’s the experience like?

“You ever seen water this clear?” That’s what the guy next to me asked as we bounced over the waves on the Makena Mele II, headed out from Maui toward Molokini Crater. I just laughed because honestly, I hadn’t. The late morning sun was already warm on my shoulders—no rush, no crowds piling up at dawn—and our captain cracked a joke about sunscreen being our ‘second skin’ for the day. There were maybe fifteen of us, tops. It felt easy, not like those big boats you see packed to the rails.

Once we got close to Molokini Crater, the water turned that impossible blue—like someone dialed up the color just for us. Our guide (I think her name was Lani?) handed out snorkel gear and helped me adjust my mask when it kept fogging up. She had this way of making everyone feel like they belonged in the ocean, even if you’re secretly nervous about fish brushing your legs (guilty). The first breath underwater surprised me—the taste of salt, muffled sounds, flashes of yellow tang darting past. I still remember how cold the water felt on my cheeks at first but then you kind of forget everything except what’s right in front of you.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much bobbing around with strangers—someone tried to say “humuhumunukunukuapua’a” and Lani nearly choked on her juice laughing. The sun on my face, voices carrying over the water, a hint of pineapple from the snacks mixing with salt air. We didn’t have to hurry anywhere; nobody rushed us back onto the boat or made us feel like we were on a schedule.

On the way back to Maui I realized my hair was stiff with salt and my lips tasted like sea spray. The captain passed around more bottled water and joked about “hydration being key if you want to keep snorkeling into your eighties.” There was something about that ride—wind in your face, everyone a little quieter than before—that stuck with me. Maybe it’s just how small things can feel big when you’re out there between sky and sea.
