What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered if sea turtles actually notice you? I did, right up until one glided past my mask — slow and unbothered — while I was still figuring out how not to fog up my snorkel. The crew on our Maui catamaran (I think it was called Ali’i Nui?) had already cracked a few jokes about “honu paparazzi” before we even dropped anchor at the reef. There’s something about hearing local slang like that — makes you feel less like a tourist, more like you’re in on some island secret. The water was cooler than I expected for late morning, but honestly, once you spot your first turtle, you forget all about that.

Our guide, Keahi, pointed out these neon parrotfish nibbling coral (he said their Hawaiian name but I blanked), and someone behind me got excited about spotting an octopus — or “tako,” which I totally mispronounced later at lunch. Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin — probably butchered it. After swimming around for what felt like ages (but maybe was just 40 minutes?), climbing back onto the catamaran felt like stepping into a different world: warm sun on your skin, towels everywhere, and this smell of grilled tortillas drifting from the taco bar. It’s funny how quickly hunger sneaks up after snorkeling.

I built my taco plate way too high (no regrets) and grabbed a margarita from the open bar — they use local tequila or something; it tasted brighter than what I’m used to back home. Sitting on the bow hammock with salsa dripping down my wrist and salt in my hair… well, that’s one of those moments that sticks with you. The photographer caught us laughing at nothing in particular — those photos are extra but tempting. If you’re thinking of a day trip snorkel in Maui that’s more about good company than ticking boxes, this is honestly it.
