What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the way the water looked—somewhere between blue and silver—when we stepped onto the yacht in Miami Beach. It felt bigger than I expected, and honestly, I had to laugh at myself for almost tripping over my own flip-flop on the deck. Our captain (Carlos, who grew up in Hialeah) gave us a quick rundown about safety and then just let us settle in. The sound of the city faded fast as we pulled away from the marina; you could still smell sunscreen and salt in the air, but it was quieter than I thought it would be out there.

Cruising past those wild mansions on Star Island and Hibiscus Island was surreal—Carlos pointed out one that apparently belonged to some pop star (I’d never heard of her, but my cousin got excited). There’s something a little voyeuristic about seeing those houses from the water. We had music going through Bluetooth speakers (someone insisted on reggaeton), drinks chilling in the cooler, and nobody seemed in any rush. The Miami skyline looked almost fake from that angle—like a postcard or a movie set—but then you notice birds skimming over Biscayne Bay or a couple of paddleboarders waving at us like they knew us.

We anchored near this sandbar where other boats were already hanging out—people laughing, floating around on inflatables shaped like pizza slices. The water was warm enough that you didn’t have to hesitate jumping in. At some point Carlos handed us off to his buddy who ran the jet skis (included if you book four hours or more—they’re strict about timing). I’d never driven one before and nearly wiped out turning too sharp; pretty sure everyone saw me flail but nobody cared. That salty spray wakes you up fast.

By late afternoon, everything slowed down—a few of us just lay back on deck listening to waves slap against the hull. It’s funny how quickly you forget your phone exists when there’s nothing urgent pulling at you. I still think about that view of downtown Miami from the water, sun reflecting off glass buildings while someone next to me tried (and failed) to open another bottle of sparkling water with wet hands. Not everything goes perfectly on these trips—and maybe that’s what makes them stick with you after.
