What’s the experience like?

So there we were, halfway up some rock ledge on the Hell’s Revenge Trail, when our guide (I think his name was Mike? Born here, anyway) just grinned and said, “Hang tight.” The engine rumbled under us—kind of a weird comfort—and honestly I could smell the hot dust before I saw it swirling in the sun. My hands were a little sweaty on the grab bar. Someone behind me let out this nervous laugh that made everyone else crack up too. I didn’t expect to feel so safe in a machine that looks like it belongs on Mars, but here we are.

Mike stopped at this spot where you could see for miles—red cliffs everywhere, shadows getting longer. He pointed out these old dinosaur tracks pressed into the stone (they’re just…there! We reached the top right as the sky started going orange and purple—one of those sunsets you don’t really believe until you see it. Everyone got quiet for a minute. Even Mike stopped talking (which is saying something). There was bottled water and snacks passed around, nothing fancy but somehow perfect after all that bouncing around. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
