What’s the experience like?

“You sure you want to drive?” That’s what our guide, Cody, asked me while handing over the keys to this beast of a Can-Am UTV. My hands were already sweating but I nodded anyway—how often do you get to take the wheel on the Hell’s Revenge trail in Moab? The sandstone felt almost soft under the tires at first, but then you hit those climbs that look impossible until you’re halfway up and realize you can’t really stop. Cody kept checking in through the radio, tossing out little facts about the Sand Flats area between warnings about “the hot sauce” (I still don’t know if he was joking). There was this moment where we paused at a ridge and I swear you could smell sagebrush and dust baking together in the sun—kind of sharp, kind of sweet.

I’d never driven a UTV before this day trip in Moab, but honestly, it didn’t matter. The guides are patient—like actually patient, not just pretending—and they talk you through every weird angle or sudden drop. At one point we stopped so Cody could point out some petroglyphs tucked into a rock face; he told us about ancient dwellers who crossed these same rocks long before any of us tried it on four wheels. The wind whipped up for a second and someone lost their hat (don’t worry, it was rescued). There was laughter echoing off the rocks and I caught myself grinning like an idiot more than once.

The whole tour is sort of wild but safe at the same time—helmets on, goggles tight, bottled water always within reach. Snacks too (which I devoured after my nerves settled). It’s open to anyone over 5 if you’re riding along, or 16 if you want to drive—just bring your license. If you’re worried about fitness or experience level, don’t be; there were folks in our group who’d never even seen a UTV before today. And yeah, there are moments that’ll make your heart thump louder than usual… but that view from the top? I still think about it sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
