My first real moment in New Orleans wasn’t jazz or beignets—it was meeting Mr. Carter outside baggage claim at Louis Armstrong airport. He texted as soon as my flight landed (“I’m here by the curb, blue sedan!”), which honestly calmed my nerves after a delayed landing and that sticky Gulf air hitting me for the first time. He waved, big smile, and somehow made me feel like I’d landed somewhere familiar, not just another city.

The drive into town was slow—rain had just stopped and everything smelled like wet pavement and gardenias. Mr. Carter asked if I’d ever been to New Orleans before (I hadn’t), then started pointing out little things: “That’s where folks line up for po’boys,” or “You see that mural? That’s new.” He didn’t rush me when I fumbled with my phone looking for my hotel address—just waited, humming something soft under his breath. The private transfer from MSY to my hotel felt less like a transaction and more like being quietly welcomed in.

I still think about that ride—the way he checked if I needed water, or offered tips about streetcars (“Don’t try them with luggage, trust me”). When we pulled up to the hotel curbside, he helped with my bag and said, “Let me know if your plans change.” It was such a small thing but felt genuine, not forced hospitality.
