What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect our guide—Derrick—to start humming Louis Armstrong as soon as we pulled away from the curb. It was like the city just poured out of him. We’d barely made it to the edge of the French Quarter before he pointed out a mural I’d never noticed on previous trips (and I’ve been here twice before). The way he described the colors—“like someone spilled Mardi Gras all over”—made me laugh. He snapped a photo of us in front of it, and somehow even my squint looked less awkward than usual.

Driving through Treme, Derrick slowed down so we could listen to a street saxophonist warming up on his porch. It was humid, but not in that sticky way—more like the air just hangs around you, carrying little hints of powdered sugar from somewhere nearby. We stopped for beignets at Cafe du Monde inside City Park. Honestly, I got powdered sugar everywhere (my shirt’s still recovering), but I swear they taste better when you’re sitting outside with coffee and cicadas buzzing somewhere in the background.

The Garden District felt quieter than I expected—old houses with ironwork balconies and giant oaks leaning over cracked sidewalks. Derrick told us about Hurricane Katrina damage near Musicians’ Village, not in a heavy-handed way, just honest and kind of personal. He waved at a neighbor who shouted something about “that band kid again.” It made me realize how small this big city can feel when you’re with someone who knows every corner. The tour moved fast but never rushed; there was time to ask about jazz history or just stare out at Uptown mansions while Derrick played us a recording from his last gig. That part surprised me—I still think about that melody sometimes when things get too quiet at home.
