What’s the experience like?

It started with the sound of ice clinking — not even kidding, that’s what I noticed first. We’d barely made it through the door when our guide, Marcus, handed us these neon wristbands (mine was too tight but I didn’t want to fuss) and pointed out the first round of shots lined up on the sticky bar. The place already smelled like sweet rum and something fried. Some folks were shy at first, but Marcus just grinned and launched us into a flip cup tournament right there. I’m still not sure how I lost so badly to a girl from Toronto — maybe my hands were shaking from excitement or nerves or both.

Walking past the line outside the next club felt weirdly good. People stared like we were celebrities or maybe just lucky. Inside, it was loud — bass thumping in my chest, bartenders slinging drinks faster than I could keep up. Our local guide kept checking in, making sure no one got lost (I almost did after following some guy’s story about Mardi Gras beads). The drink specials changed at every stop; sometimes it was a mystery shot, sometimes cheap beers you could barely taste over all the noise. At one point someone started singing “When the Saints Go Marching In” and half our group joined in — not well, but nobody cared.

I think what surprised me most was how easy it was to talk to strangers here. Maybe it’s just New Orleans — people are open, quick to laugh, happy to share which bar has the best po’ boys or where you’re most likely to spot a ghost after midnight. There was this moment outside one of the clubs where it got quiet for a second; you could hear distant brass music somewhere down Bourbon Street. That stuck with me more than any of the actual drinks did.
