What’s the experience like?

You know you’re in New York when you walk past a line of people giggling outside a museum and nobody bats an eye. We’d barely made it through the doors of the Museum of Sex before the sound hit me — this low hum of laughter, mixed with something like carnival music echoing up the stairs. Our tickets got scanned quick (they checked our IDs too, no joke), and then we were off, following neon arrows toward Super Funland. I didn’t expect to be handed tokens for games, but there they were — little plastic coins that felt weirdly nostalgic in my palm.

The first thing that hit me was the smell — sweet popcorn, maybe? Or just my brain playing tricks because of all the bright lights and spinning wheels. Our guide (well, more like a staff member who clearly loved their job) pointed out some old-school arcade machines and told us about how artists had helped design these wild installations. There was this one ride — I won’t spoil it — but let’s just say I laughed so hard I almost dropped my phone. People around us were strangers but everyone loosened up fast; someone from Brooklyn tried to beat me at a ring toss game and we both lost spectacularly.

Upstairs, things got quieter for a minute. The main museum exhibits are more reflective — lots about history, art, even science behind sexuality. Some stuff was playful, some honestly made me pause and think (and maybe blush). It’s not just shock value; there’s real context here, stories from different cultures and times. At one point I caught myself staring at an old photograph longer than I meant to. The light in that room was soft and kind of golden, which made everything feel less like a display and more like… well, life.

I still think about that last hallway before we left — voices echoing off tile, someone humming under their breath near the bar. We grabbed a drink (not included with the ticket but worth it), browsed the shop full of things you probably won’t find anywhere else in Manhattan, and stepped back out into the city feeling lighter somehow.
