What’s the experience like?

We’d barely finished our first coffee when our guide, Keola, started pointing out the folds of Diamond Head in the morning light—he joked that if we blinked, we’d miss half the island. The van was quiet at first (maybe too early for most of us), but by the time we reached Halona Blowhole and felt that salty spray on our faces, everyone had woken up. There’s something about standing there with strangers and watching water blast from lava rock that makes you feel like a kid again. I tried to snap a photo but mostly just laughed when my phone got misted over.

Byodo-In Temple was next, tucked into these lush mountains—almost unreal how peaceful it felt. Our group rang the big bell (Keola said it brings good luck) and wandered among koi ponds. I caught this faint incense smell drifting by while a couple of locals left offerings. It wasn’t even noon yet but already felt like we’d been everywhere. At Mokoli‘i Island lookout, someone pointed out a rainbow over Kaneohe Bay—honestly, that view is still stuck in my head.

Lunch was messy garlic shrimp from a North Shore shack (I got sauce all over my hands—worth it). Then Turtle Beach: I didn’t actually expect to see turtles but there they were, just bobbing around while we floated above them with snorkel gear Keola handed out. Water was cooler than I thought; sand gritty between my toes. I chatted with Li from Vancouver as we dried off—she tried to teach me “honu” means turtle in Hawaiian. Probably butchered it.

We made a quick stop at Dole Plantation for pineapple ice cream (Dole Whip? It’s sweet and cold and sticky). Somewhere along the drive back through Haleiwa town, I realized how much ground we’d covered—and how different each stop felt. The van was quieter again; maybe everyone was tired or just full of sun and shrimp. Anyway, I keep thinking about those turtles gliding under us—kind of calming, you know?
