What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the color—this wild, almost fake-looking green-blue water around Panama City Beach. We’d barely left the dock when someone shouted “dolphin!” and sure enough, two fins popped up right by the bow. Our captain, Jamie (who had that sunburned Florida look), slowed down so we could watch them glide alongside us for a minute. I didn’t expect to be grinning like a kid before we even got to Shell Island.

There’s something about being on a catamaran with strangers that makes you chatty. One family from Georgia shared snacks with us while their little boy tried to spot sea turtles—he swore he saw one but honestly it was probably just driftwood. The bar was open early (maybe too early for Rum Punch but hey, vacation rules). When we pulled up to Shell Island, the sand felt squeaky under my feet and the air smelled faintly of sunscreen and salt. I grabbed a snorkel mask and waded in—the water was so clear I could see tiny fish darting around my toes.

Our guide pointed out some shells worth keeping (I still have one in my bag), and later we took turns on the paddle boards. I fell off twice—no one cared, just laughed along with me. There were crabs scuttling sideways near the rocks and pelicans diving for fish out past the jetties at St. Andrews State Park. It’s funny, I thought I’d be most excited about dolphins but now it’s those quiet moments floating in shallow water that stick with me.
