"Did you hear that?" someone whispered behind me as we stood outside the old State Capitol in downtown Raleigh, and honestly, I wasn’t sure if I did or if my imagination was just running wild. The air felt heavy—like it does right before a thunderstorm—and our guide, Marcus, had this way of pausing mid-story that made every creak and distant footstep sound suspicious. We started just as dusk settled in, which was perfect because the city’s usual energy seemed to fade and all those old bricks and iron fences felt like they were holding secrets.

I’d never thought much about Raleigh’s haunted side until Marcus pointed out the White-Holman House—he said people still see a woman on the staircase sometimes. The streetlights flickered a bit (maybe just bad wiring), but it gave me chills anyway. At Haywood Hall, he told us about John Haywood himself; apparently, some folks say his spirit still lingers there. There was this faint smell of wet leaves in the air from Nash Square nearby, and I kept glancing over my shoulder for shadowy figures crossing the grass. No luck—or maybe that’s for the best.

The Executive Mansion looked almost too grand to be spooky, but then Marcus mentioned Governor Fowle’s ghost knocking at odd hours. I laughed when he tried to imitate the sound—he’s definitely heard some stories from locals who grew up around here. The whole route is about a mile, so it’s not too much walking, but you do get time to soak up each spot (and nervously scan windows for faces). We couldn’t go inside any of these places since they’re private or government buildings, but standing outside with everyone quietly listening made it feel like we were trespassing into another era.

We finished near Death and Taxes—the restaurant used to be a coffin store, which is… well, fitting for a Raleigh ghost tour. I didn’t expect to leave feeling oddly connected to these old buildings and their stories. Even now, sometimes when I pass by Nash Square at night, I catch myself looking for those shadows again. Guess some walks stick with you longer than you think.
