What’s the experience like?

Someone hands me a little plastic badge and grins, “You’re the brains, right?” I laugh — not sure if that’s true, but we’re already being ushered into this wild maze of clues at Westfield UTC in San Diego. Our guide, Chris, keeps things light (“Don’t worry, I’ll throw you a bone if you get stuck”), and honestly, I’m relieved. The air smells faintly like popcorn from the food court nearby. We pick “The Heist” because my cousin swears she could outsmart an art thief (she can’t — but she tries). The clock starts ticking and suddenly it’s all frantic whispers and hands everywhere, searching for hidden codes behind fake paintings.

I didn’t expect to actually feel nervous when the timer hit 20 minutes left. My friend Sam kept muttering about the evil warden in “Prison Break” next door — you can hear muffled shouts through the wall sometimes, which just adds to the weird energy. At one point I got so stuck on a puzzle that Chris had to nudge us with a hint over the intercom (“Try looking under the table”). It was oddly satisfying when we finally cracked it open — there’s this tiny rush of victory that makes you want to high-five everyone in sight. You forget you’re inside a shopping mall for an hour; it’s just your team against time.

Afterwards we spilled out into the bright mall corridor, sweaty and laughing.
