What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect to feel so drawn in right from the start. We met at Kiener Plaza, just behind the Old Courthouse — there was this soft morning light on the brick, and a few kids were splashing each other in the fountains. Our guide, Marcus, had this way of talking about St. Louis that made it feel personal. He pointed at the courthouse and started telling us about the Dred Scott case — honestly, I knew the name but not much else. Hearing how it happened right there made me look at those old walls differently.

We wandered through downtown, past people heading to work and a street musician playing something bluesy near a food cart (the smell of coffee kind of followed us for a while). Marcus kept dropping little facts — like how St. Louis used to be called “Mound City” because of all the ancient earthworks, which I’d never heard before. When we reached the Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France (everyone just calls it the Old Cathedral), I stopped for a second because I wasn’t expecting stained glass that bright or mosaics that detailed. It was quieter inside than I thought it would be; even my footsteps felt loud.

The riverfront was windy that day — you could see barges moving slow on the Mississippi, and Marcus talked about how this spot was once packed with wagons heading west. There’s something about standing by that huge river and picturing all those journeys starting here. Someone in our group asked if locals still come down here much; Marcus just grinned and said he brings his niece for ice cream sometimes when it’s hot out. That stuck with me for some reason.
